The Pilates Method is a conditioning program founded by
Joseph Pilates that works to educate and balance the muscles
of the body. The exercises strongly focus on the core
muscles of the body (abdominal muscles, muscles of the spine,
pelvic floor), with the idea that from a strong center, your
limbs can move freely and with support. Pilates works
your muscles in a lengthened capacity which increases the
body’s flexibility, decompresses the joints, and creates
elongated and toned muscles. Practicing Pilates improves
breath, alignment and overall posture.
The Pilates equipment (including the Reformer and Cadillac)
is unique as an exercise tool. It uses springs as resistance
as opposed to a heavy weight. Such light tension gives
support and a deeper stretch in many of the exercises, while
still emphasizing control from the core muscles. The
equipment also gives the practitioner valuable feedback on
alignment and uniform work in the musculature.
While Pilates is loved by athletes, dancers, and many healthy
individuals, it is also excellent for rehabilitation of injury.
It has proven itself particularly useful for healing pain
associated with misalignment such as scoliosis, herniated
disc, trauma/pain related to car accidents, deterioration
in the hip joint, and long-term chronic pain, especially
in the lower back.
* Private sessions incorporate the
Pilates Reformer, Cadillac and Mat work.
* Group classes teach
the Pilates Mat work.

With body, mind and
spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole,
what else could reasonably be expected other than
an active, alert, disciplined person?
